Wyld Notes by season: what temperature does to fragrance

The answer starts with physics: heat speeds up evaporation — the same fragrance reads louder and sweeter in summer, quieter and shorter in winter. From this, perfumery derived its rule of thumb: bright and fresh for warm days, warm and resinous for cold ones. Here we apply it to the four launch fragrances with published profiles — as a reading of the pyramids, not a rulebook. Anything may be worn at any time.

Why temperature changes a fragrance

Perfume is evaporation: what you smell are molecules leaving the skin. On warm skin that happens faster — the fragrance projects more, and sweet base notes arrive earlier and wider. In the cold, the opposite holds: evaporation slows, light top notes feel shorter, and little of a delicate fragrance survives outdoors. That is not a matter of taste but of thermodynamics — and the sober core behind every seasonal recommendation.

The rule of thumb — and its edges

From the physics follows the convention: citrus, green and bright florals for the warm months, because they take the heat without turning loud; vanilla, resin and spice for the cold ones, because they cut through the muting of winter air. Two honest footnotes: first, this is a rule of thumb, not a rule — if you love your winter fragrance in July, you are right. Second, it depends on dosage: a sweet fragrance applied sparingly works in warm weather by the very same logic.

The four launch fragrances through the year

Read from the pyramids: White Lie, with its bergamot-geranium opening and dry base, is the brightest of the range — the natural pick for spring and warm days. Smokey Ember, with cypress, black spruce and smoke, belongs to the season of cool air — autumn. Black Book, with nutmeg, frankincense and tonka, is the winter pyramid of the range. Sweet Decadence sits classically on the cold side with its vanilla-coconut sweetness, though its orange-lavender opening keeps it brighter than the two dark ones. And one honest note: the European launch has no pure summer citrus — Fireside Citrus follows later, according to the brand.

If — then

  • If you are choosing for spring and warm days

White Liebergamot and geranium open, the base stays dry — by the pyramid, the brightest pick of the launch range.

  • If you are choosing for autumn

Smokey Embercypress, black spruce and smoke — the pyramid of cool air.

  • If you are choosing for winter

Black Booknutmeg, frankincense and tonka cut through the muting of cold air best, by the rule of thumb.

  • If you want a sweet fragrance for the cold half of the year

Sweet Decadencetonka and vanilla carry in the cold; the orange opening keeps the pyramid friendly.

Our note

The season match is a rule of thumb with a physical core — not a law. The pyramids tell you how each fragrance handles heat and cold; what you make of that is for your nose to decide, not the calendar.
