Smokey Ember or Black Book?

Smokey Ember and Black Book are the two dark fragrances in the Wyld Notes launch range — which is why they are so often named in the same breath. Their pyramids, though, tell two different stories: one walks into the forest, the other into the library. Here is the comparison, level by level, by the official notes.

The first impression

Smokey Ember opens, by its pyramid, with lemon and juniper — bright, clear, almost alpine. Black Book begins with nutmeg and ginger: warm and spiced. That is the biggest difference right at the start: Smokey Ember sets off cool and fresh, Black Book warm and dry.

The heart

Both carry a blossom with company at their heart: Smokey Ember puts jasmine next to clary sage — floral, but grounded in herbs. Black Book puts osmanthus next to juniper — an apricot-like, slightly leathery blossom with a dry freshness beside it. Read from the notes, Smokey Ember’s heart is greener, Black Book’s sweeter and more idiosyncratic.

The drydown

The bases are worlds apart: Smokey Ember fades on cypress and black spruce — conifer wood, resin, the smoke above the forest that gives it its name. Black Book lays down olibanum and tonka — frankincense and sweet warmth. By the pyramids: more forest and smoke in Smokey Ember, more spice and sweet resin in Black Book.

If — then

  • If you want to be outdoors — conifer forest, resin, cool air

Smokey Emberjuniper in the opening, cypress and black spruce in the base: the most forest-like pyramid in the range.

  • If you want to be indoors — spices, frankincense, warm sweetness

Black Booknutmeg, osmanthus and tonka draw the fragrance inward: warm, spiced, resinous-sweet.

  • If most dark fragrances are too sweet for you

Smokey Emberits base, by the pyramid, does without tonka and vanilla — smoke instead of sugar.

Our note

Two dark fragrances, two places: Smokey Ember is the campfire in the conifer forest, Black Book the reading chair with frankincense and spices. The pyramids separate them more clearly than the colour world suggests.
